What is the most common cause of computer lock up on shutdown in Win98SE

My Dad is trying to help a friend tonight with no joy. The guy is a newbie so any additional help from you techsters would be appreciated.

For the Most part, the Prob seems to be with the Fast speed of the new drives, and the size of the cache, in other words, the cache isn't always completely Flushed, because the drive is so darn fast :)

I've seen alot of problems with shutdown that have been "cured" by disabling sb emulation!

Microsoft has a patch for this. Try searching the windows update page under fast shutdown.

Also network card drivers can cause this.

My intel network card needed updated drivers or it would lock-up the pc on shutdown.
