What is the maximum length of Cat 5 cable that you can run?

Can I run 100 ft long cable from my flimsy Negear wireless router with two computers alreay connected to it?

Does the length of cable contibute to decrease in speed?

Thanks!

100 meters.. aka 300 ft..

speed doesn't really affect it.. just collision if you have multiple long runs..

90 meter solid core with 5 meter patch cables on each end.

that's your limit.

BUT, 100 meg full duplex can work at longer distances (mainly because its full duplex) but at that point you are out of spec and it isn't recommended.

-edit- you didn't hear that from me....I'm a cabling nazi and would never publically say its OK to go over 100 meters.

Thanks a lot for your responses. Just to be on the safe side, I ordered 50 ft CAT6 cable .. drilled a small hole in the closet to create a short-cut .. Hopefully that should be okay ... right?

Should be just fine, unless the hole leads to a wormhole that extends over a few light years. And if that's the case, Stephen Hawking will be very interested in meeting you. 🙂
