I am trying to upgrade thecus W4000 which is based on D2701, and their support documents say that maximum memory supported is 4GB, and they also mention that there are instances where people are using it with 8GB.

CPU Specs:

Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type): 4 GB
Memory Types: DDR3 800/1066
Max # of Memory Channels: 1
Instruction Set: 64-bit

Edit: the motherboard has memory two slots even though the CPU spec says it is single channel

How can one use more than 4GB with this CPU anyways? Is memory address range deliberately limited by 64bit CPUs?

You seem to have answered your own question. It's limited to 4gb of ram. The board slots support 2gb sticks, so to get 4gb you need 2 sticks. That's why there are two slots.
You can try the listed memory type that might work with two 4gb sticks, but it would be at your own risk.

That CPU is a dog from 2011... :)

Thanks for the reply! I saw that PDF and noticed this line for W4000:
According from Intel specification support up to 4GB MAX, even some user workging with 8GB but Thecus no comment for this behavior and user have to take itself own risk

I also read some comment on Newegg stating that it is working with 8GB (2x4GB).
