What is the "lube" in lube, oil, filter?

I've always changed my own oil, but what's the "lube" part of the maintenance? Is it just taking a grease gun and going around to all the hinges (doors, trunk, hood, etc.)? Is it really necessary if your doors don't squeak?

You need to lube up before going to a Jiffy Lube, otherwise it hurts a bit.

But most newer cars have sealed ball joints etc.

 

So consensus from ATOT is that on a 2004, it's not really necessary? Thx.

Yes. Nearly all newer cars have sealed bearings and joints.
