Here is the situation ...

I have a DSL Internet connection which goes into a router to share the connection.
I need to share this connection with a computer in a parallel apartment...

My question ...

What is the LONGEST length of cable possible i can use to share this connection?
The data transfer rate(bandwitch) is not too high, a maximum of 50 Kb/sec...

Thanks

What i found on net....
The maximum length (maximum certifiable length) for CAT 5 patch or crossover cables is 328 feet (100 meters)....

Is this correct?

The spec calls for 100 meters, yes. Keep in mind that any long run should be mostly solid core copper cables in the walls then a few meters of stranded core patch cable outside.

Do a search, this one has been discussed many, many times around here and there's other good info to be had in someof the other threads.

That is the specfication. The longest actually possible will be longer or shorter depending on the outputs and input sensitivities of the terminating equipment and the actual electrical characteristics of the cable used.

And, of course, you can double that distance simply by using a cheap hub as a repeater.

I guess I'd like to point out that Category 5 rating is a specification. If a cable passes cat5 tests, then ethernet can use it perfectly at 100 meters. Only if the cable doesn't pass cat 5 tests would you see poor results.

The whole reason for the spec is "guaranteed to work flawlessly".

you can search for outdoor and cat 5 to see the inherent dangers of running cable outside.

Well I ran my DSL connection to share with my family thru out the house (all 3 floors). 1 dsl modem, 1 router, 3 switches (one for each floor). it all works out fine. I ran the cable thru the skylight window which is inside the house.

True. Statistics show that we have a better chance of getting hit by lightning that winning the megaMillion Lottery.

Longest run I ever did was 521 +/- Worked fine.

Thread is here

I do not recommend this for a permanent install for a business that is going to rely on it to make money.
I did it and didn?t sleep to well. The office is finished and the runs are a more stress less 100' max.
All 18 people are happy now in there new office.

I hope you are going to buy good under ground rated cable. Make sure you get a can of cleaner when you get the cable, the sealent in that cable is a bitch to get off.

I surely hope your underground cable is grounded and has lighting protection on it.

But by then its lost its CAT5 certification.

Can tell that you are not Repair Technician. Ain't nothing guaranteed.

The original question and thread title was "What is the longest length possile for network cable."

Any holes drilled from inside to outside need to be slanted downward outward so any water drips outside rather than inside. If you worry about lightning you can run a #10 or better ground wire to earth ground and install TeleCo protectors on each lead on both ends. Or take the chance that you could have a fantastic story to tell of toasting equipment. I'd opt for the story.

If you are running between two buildings, Cat-5 cable is not up to being stretched unsupported any great distance. You might consider dropping to back to cat-3 and using Telco 2-pair drop wire.

I do not recommend this......
Whatever it takes to get connectivity, eh? My worst, so far, also a temp:

A DSL line connecting to a Westell Wirespeed...
connecting to an SMC Barricade router w/ 4 port hub...
about 250 feet of twisted pair to a Kingston 5 port hub...
about 100 feet of twisted pair to a Fallon 8 port hub...
about 350 feet of underground (100 pair, black sheath) telephone cable to a UB2400 hub...
about 100 feet of twisted pair to another UB2400 hub...
and a final 50 feet to the P233/Win98 that is running the Xitami server software.

Worked fine. Site was limited by the 256Kbps upload so there was no noticable difference between that mess and running between the buildings on fiber. I have a few things I want to test, like how far can you push 100baseT over cat-3 cable?

The wire will be running along side with the building wall externally (touching it)

There are 4 floors above me.... is it still a lightiing rod?

Give it whatever support you can along the way. Any grounded metal on the roof will serve as a lighting rod -- such as a neighbor's CB antenna, etc..
