Civil Air Patrol, we were looking for a lost plane. In mountainous terrain, a search plane is totally out of communication ( line of sight) with the mission base, and an orbiting aircraft is the only way to maintain communication. If your engine quits in the search at 500~800AGL, you will have a minute or so to let somebody know
It has never happened on one of the searches I participated in, but it is nice to know somebody is looking out for you.
