After building my $400 htpc (q3800,8gb,ssd,gt240) - i have found that my old school westy lvm42 v2 isn't very good at dark scenes. Also i'm getting old so watching 1080p on 42" seems a little small to enjoy the full resolution at 5-8ft distance. (using LP3065 right now at 6" distance).

What is the current best in game for good low light scenes, wide gamut?

also i have a Huey pro; what is a good target gamut and color to calibrate the TV to?

I've got a LP2480zx 24" at work calibrated. I could bring that home for comparison. After it warms up it looks pretty decent (30-bit displayport). I was looking for something with a little more punch than my LP2480ZX obviously at a larger size. LCD limit or is plasma the only way?

I'm not very knowledgeable in this area, but I do believe some of the nicer Panasonic plasmas have to close to the kuro TVs in picture quality.

I'm not sure if they're available yet, but the RGB Dynamic LED TVs may also work well for you.

your best bet is to try and find a 2009 Kuro

closest is a Panasonic VT25 but the kuro is still king by a large margin

According to Cnet, Sony's lastest 3d TV has black levels that rival the Kuro. Not sure about the other stuff.

Todays Kuro? The Elite 101-FD that I bought last night from best buy. :)

Maybe the VT series from Panny, but those are 3D screens (yuck).

You bought the Signature Pro-101FD or the Elite Pro-111FD? Either way, nice grab, especially now with so few left. The Signature is superior though. :)

Elite Signature Series Pro 101-FD. $1999.99 + $250 2yr warranty (think they had to include this to get the price so low) from Best Buy.

I'll have to go calibrate this westy and see if i can blow the dark scenes up a little. i think i want a system with no brains or google tv which means wait a few months. Seems dorky to have apps on a tv when you have a q8300 htpc powering it lol.

do you drive your tv's at default 1920x1080@60/120/240? or do you adjust to source and let the tv do its thing? I would suspect modern gpu/cpu has far more horsepower than any screen currently.

They need to supply icc profiles with the movies so the rendering intent when the gamut cannot be made can reflect the specific show rather than trying to shoehorn a nice panel gamut which is still far too small for motion picture.

If you happen to see a 101-FD in atlanta ;) let me know. I wish i had time to go hunting but with kid n work these days a few hours to forum is about it.
