no idea. old TSR fantasy novels (e.g. dragonlance, forgotten realms) have a lot more interesting plots, characters, magic.

They're great stories with vivid imagery and interesting characters. They're targeted at children, so they're easy to read, but the plots are engaging for adults and kids alike. Why not pick up the first one and give it a go?

it's an entertaining enough read to keep people curious as to what's happening. It's pretty well written so that anyone can read it. so basically it applies to a large fan base, easily accessable, and relatively entertaining. It's like the blockbuster movie of books.. kinda.

I'm not at all "into it" but I have suffered through the movies with the kids.
My kids sure like the movies.

Pretty much nailed it. I don't have(or make) time to do a lot of reading, so I've only read the first one, but I think Rowling is a fantastic story teller. It's more simplistic than some of the fantasy books I've "tried" to read in the past, so it's easier to get into and attracts a much wider audience.

Don't know what else to say other than pick up the first book and read it. Maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't. Obviously a lot of people like them.

That's a pretty retarded statement. You can market and hype something all you want. But if it sucks, it's still not going to be popular and successful.

i agree. i actually started reading harry potter during my freshman year of college, during finals week. i'm not sure if that did anything, but i scored pretty well on my exams. i wonder if some wizardry had something to do with it ;)

i'm not a reader, and the only books i've read in their entirety in the past 10 years probably has been only harry potter, but it's totally engaging and the stories are original, unique, and most importantly, climactic.

i must say that i was told to read it by my sister who is 7 years younger than me, and obviously, i didn't respond to her request at first. then, when two of my college classmates (one being two years ahead) told me to read the set, i got hooked and read the entire three books (the only books available at the time) in one week while taking my exams as well. they just grab you, kind of like 24 does, i guess.

so i did go forward reading harry potter under the suggestion of my peers, but once i did, i thoroughly enjoyed it. it's nice to read a book that you can talk to your friends about at a later date asking them what they thought of the plot.

still, you're not going to get a convincing argument from anyone unless you read it yourself. then you'll see why people like it.

Because the books are actually good. Read one of them, not just watch the ghey movies. Then if you think their stupid, then your opinion was well formed.

Why do all these people dislike something without trying it, or knowing anything about it? Thats the real question. I thought it was all hype too until I read the first book, and I liked it. So I read more. Go figure, you mean you should actually try something before passing judgement.

I've read the first two books. And I find them mediocre at best. Too simplistic for my taste with very obvious endings. I'm truthfully stumped as to why this series is such a big hit.

So I'll just attributed it to the work of the devil.

The books get more involved and "darker" the further along in the series....

That's just about it. Most of the adults who rave about these are people who haven't read anything for 20 years.

For those interested in some real fantasy, try the Chronicles of Narnia or the Lord of the Rings. Each of these is superior in almost every conceivable way, including incredibly vivid imagery and fascinating characters. A word of warning, though, some HP fans might be dismayed at the vast amount of material "borrowed" from these two great series.

You know what fsking pisses me off? that cheap trash, cruddy books like harry potter have people older than 12 so enthralled. I'm annoyed that that no-talent hack rawling is a billionaire while REAL authors produce truly beautiful books for practically nothing, in terms of money or hype, in comparison. I wish everyone would shut the hell up about harry potter.

to be fair, you did ask for it. :)

and no, I'm not a writer.

The fact is HP appeals to everyone from 12-60yo. I'm 24 and have been reading books since I was very young. I started reading Stephen King, Poe and Lovecraft long before most parents would have found it acceptable for their children to read such things. And I've read every LOTR book about 5 times, and every Narnia book at least twice. I still found HP very fun and easy to read. Sure, easy may be a bad thing but its light reading for you after something a lot more advanced.

I think a lot of people hate it just because everyone likes it, that cool to be a rebel mentality that so many have. If you've actually read them and didn't like them, fine who cares. But I read the first one after the movie just on a whim, and was addicted. I had to know what happened, and its like heroin for a lot of people, and so the hype grows with the anticipation.

Whenever anybody asks what my favorite book is, I tell them the Harry Potter series, but am quick to follow with the statement that I got into the books before everybody jumped on the bandwagon.

Why like the books? The characters are engaging and are more than one dimensional, it's got an engaging story that continues to become more complex and interesting, and it's a quick and easy read. As much as I love to read, I find myself getting bored by lots of flowery descriptions, and Harry Potter cuts to the chase, giving me a good story with awesome characters without a lot of deep thought.

I also find the His Dark Material trilogy by Philip Pullman to be an awesome series, and it's probably my favorite series after H.P. It's got a more complex story, and isn't as childish as Harry Potter is, but could still be considered to be a children's book.

Oh, and by the way, the Harry Potter movies suck.
