What is the highest CPU that I could use?

Hi,
I have a MS-6380LE from MSI which uses the KT266 chipset from VIA. I know it supports both 200/266MHZ front bus but based on MSI's official site it supports up to XP 2000+ only. Since there are other XP processors with 266MHZ front bus, can I use them? For example, the XP 2400+ has 266MHZ front bus but for some reason the MSI site does not list it as a supported CPU. I'm still using my 1.4 GHZ Thunderbird that I got with the board when it was still top of the line in the old days. I'm thinking about swapping the CPU to a XP 2400+ before I finally do a system upgrade with a new board. Any others out there who uses a board with the KT266 (not the KT266A or Pro version) companied to something higher than a XP2000+? Or if anyone knows any info on the compatibility of the KT266 with a XP2400+, it is appreciated.

You might be able to get by with a 266 FSB 2600+ if you can find one, but the 2400 won't be much of a step down.

Should be good, but I'd make sure if I was you, don't want to plop down $100 on a CPU and find out you can't use it. Shoot MSI an email and ask if you don't see anything on their website.

Yeah, I might just shoot MSI an email. Hopefully they will reply.

I also hear the XP1700+ is an overclocking beast, but I'm a total newbie when it comes to OC'ing. I'll probably do more research on OC'ing if I choose to do this route. Don't you need a special stepping of the XP1700+ to get good OC'ing result?

Yeah, check the Overclocking Forum and ask about 1700+ Tbred B steppings for overclocking, they're pretty helpful in there, as long as those pesky Intel fanboys don't get involved 🙂.

There should be a BIOS upgrade that will let you support up to atleast a 2400+ or 2600+. I remember looking at the MSI website on the KT133A bios for my brother in law's computer and there was a BIOS that he could upgrade to get his mobo to support 2600+ or was it 2400+.

The last bios update from MSI that allowed for new cpu's dates from Jan 2002 and relates to the 2000+.

No Thoroughbreds are listed in the cpu support area.

Good luck with your 2400+ T-Bred! :brokenheart:

I'd email them or check out the CPU compatibility thing.

My older KT133 board doesn't take Palominos, not even if I wanted to run it on a 100 bus.

My current KT266A board (EPoX 8KHA+) however, takes Tbreds, though no Barton support is mentioned. I'm also considering getting a Tbred B 1700+ (from excaliberpc) and running mine at 16 * 133 = 2133 = 2600+

The major problem is not the FSB, but the VRM's. Its probably limited to that because MSI is more worried about the motherboard not being able to supply the processor as much power.
