I believe that it more or less had that function. I think I used to know but now I just remember that it was for some old-school DOS apps, but the button is pretty much useless nowadays.

It is like the apendix of keyboard keys. Remnants of the DOS age when disks were square ;)

it also does something in excel.

From Gateway support :):

Enables the Scroll lock function so that you can scroll through large volumes of text. (This is only available in some programs.)

The Scroll Lock status indicator appears while this function is enabled. Press this key combination again to disable the function.

Oooh! Finally found some use of it in a Windows app:

Indicates when the Scroll Lock function has been enabled. This causes certain programs to behave differently when cursor keys are used. For example, when Scroll Lock is enabled, pressing the down arrow in Microsoft Excel causes the entire worksheet to scroll down one row instead of moving the focus point down one cell as the down arrow normally would.

From here.

It locks up Linux/Unix front ends also. Pain in the ass getting called in for that. I never used in dos, just did the /p command for pause.

Ummmm... WHERE ARE ALL THE BSD GEEKS WHO KNOWS WHAT THIS IS FOR?!?

When you hit Scroll Lock on a BSD system, ON THE COMMAND LINE, it sets it so you can scroll back through the last 200 or so lines of the terminal.

IT IS FAR FROM USELESS, ITS GREAT!!!
