Technically XP2800+ Thoroughbred "B" (OPGA) with 166FSB and 384k total cache (256 L2) = 13.5 x 166 = 2250mhz
Here is a Review of that one and if you can't find it because it is so rare the next best thing is the 2700+ which is also reviewed there.

Bartons are also Socket A chips. The fasted being the 3200+

Are refering to the fastest Thoroughbred? The only difference between T-bred and Barton is the L2 Cache size (256k vs 512k) and the FSB speed.

All Bartons are 333 or 400 FSB; T-breds are 266 or 333 FSB.

Are you refering to the fastest Socket A w/ 266 FSB?
If so, the fastest is the 2600+

If you are referring to the fastest Socket A w 333FSB, that would be the 3000+ (Barton) or a 2800+ (T-bred), but it is next to impossible to find a 2800 t-bred.

Any reason why you aren't interested in a Barton? If you are limited by your Motherboard, the manufacturer should be able to tell you the fastest processor supported.

Actually, I have forgotten which board I have. It was the first line of nforce2 boards epox put out. It says it does not support the barton core. Hopefully it will in future Bios upgrades.

The fastest socket a processor is the 2.3 or 2.4 ghz procesor (I forget which) that hp had an exclusive deal to release and sell. I remember reading a small tidbit about it and that at the time it was the fastest chip amd had produced. Unfortunately those never went to the masses. I think it was a special deal or something.

Be careful, the 3000+ is available in 333 fsb (2167MHz) and 400 fsb (2100MHz).

I don't think the 3000+ is worth the extra $45 for ~80MHz increase in cpu speed. Benchmarks don't really show a marked improvement.

2600+ 266's are also very hard to find. In practice, the fastest readily available 266MHz bus Tbred is a 2400+.
