What is the fastest loading windows?

Anyone have clue? I certainly dont. I was thinking about maybe getting a Shuttle PC or a mini system from http://www.directron.com/ezgo.html for a in car DVD/CD/VCD/MP3. Does anyone know a good set up?

I mean do you think a 10 key keyboard would work fine? I mean how would yo go about navigating? Is there a way I can get a touch screen LCD and navigate windows that way? I would rather not have to use a mouse at every intersection to change songs etc.

Also being in my car what is a good OS to load onto it? It doesn't need to be fancy just enough to run winamp or whatever and also be able to load quickly! I think ME loads in 30 seconds? But is there any other os either windows or non windows that could load any quicker and be more reliable?

definitely. windows 3.1 loads pretty damn fast on my celeron 800, way faster than windows 2000. linux is always a good choice

Of the modern Windows variants, the fastest to boot would be Windows XP, after using the
bootvis utility. (and tweaking it a bit).

Windows 2000 can be made to boot fast too, if you take the time to disable half the services
and remove uneeded components.

ME was also designed to load fast, but you have to tweak it a bit too, to get to the point
where you want it to act like a stereo front end.

I think jhu was joking with the windows 3.1 comment, since it was designed to run on systems
from over ten years ago, you would expect it to boot pretty quick on modern hardware.
(the problem is you wouldn't be able to do much with it afterward).

You can get touch screens for Windows, but I'm not sure if the support comes from the
manufacturer of the screen or from Microsoft. (I suspect a little of both).

You might want to check the forums at some of the Home Theater / AV sites for tips as well.

First off, i would laugh at 3.1, while nice at its time and it might load fast, as all software tends to on new hardware, its not a smart choice.

I think linux wouldn't be a bad idea for what you said you want to run. It can play mp3s, and boot fast, very fast if alot of services are disabled.
It definately worth a look.

what does your car look like? and where do you live?

i dont want to be near you if theres a chance youre watching dvds or navigating through scenes on one while youre driving 🙂

linux would probably be faster, and theres a good likelihood you could find a distro made for something like this. i remember a multimedia linux distro from a couple months back that booted into dvd mode, to play dvds or music. dont remember who made it though, maybe lindows or someone else trying to get into the cheap home pc/entertainment arena

it was at theregister though, if that helps...

Win XP claims to load faster but after you get it and your software loaded and configured, it's no faster than Win 2k. 🙁

Windows XP.

I can cold boot my Windows XP machine and be at a usable desktop in about 20-25 seconds. I can start my Windows 2000 machine and be at a usable desktop in about 60 seconds. The Windows 2000 machine loads nothing but NAV 2003 and NIS 2003. Windows XP loads NAV 2004, NIS 2003, WinAMP, nForce2 tray dealie, and SysMetrix. I am able to restart my Windows XP machine in less time than I am able to start my Windows 2000 machine.

Linus sounds like a good choice, as you don't really need the computer to do much of anything outside of play MP3s. It's probably faster (I am not a Linux guy). And I also agree that using a mouse (or any computer for that matter) while driving is probably a bad idea...

boot time is so dependant on how stupid you are/arent...

if you understand how it works, you can make it as fast as it is physically able to boot. otherwise, it starts crap, you get slow boot times, therefore you make dumb statements like even saying the words "windows 3.1" as a possible choice

i would rather use a ti-85 to try and write a school paper than use windows 3.1 for anything except making fun of

edit: my post = spiteful, but still contributing to the general topic

I'm using Windows XP with all the unneeded services turned off. Boot from fresh takes about 35 seconds (VIA Epia M10000 1GHz processor, 40gb Maxtor 7200rpm drive). Returning from hibernation takes about 15 seconds (including POST).

As for touchscreen, yes it is possible, check out DSCustoms or DigitalWW. If you plan on having any text showing, then you will want a VGA one 🙂

Confused

A very basic win95 loads in just a few seconds on an old pentium. 95 gets slow when you load tons of crap, but for just an MP3 player... it will be FAST.
