What is the fastest linux distribution for use on an old laptop?

That depends on what you want it to look like and do (and how old the laptop is). The default answers for "fastest" are usually Slackware and Gentoo.

Well, if he REALLY wants a GUI, he could go for a bare Slackware system + Blackbox ...should give him plenty of GUI.
Maybe even Ratpoison :)

You can check out Vector linux. It's designed specificly to be used on older computers (especially laptops) and it chooses programs that will get the most out of your system without bogging it down. It's compatable with the current version of slackware so the packages can interchange. I used it on a 200mmx laptop I had and it took up little room and worked well.
