It doesn't matter. USB 2.0 will limit your external HDD performance to around 25Mbps or so, no matter if you get the "slowest" or the "fastest." Thus, I'd say you should shop based on features, price and warranty.

Once you move to USB 3.0, performance starts to make a difference.
 
512gb ssd will be fastest since the latency will be far lower when in quick removal mode this could be really important given the lack of caching
