I was at an anime convention last weekend and I want to make a small "trailer" of all the stuff I recorded..

What program do you all recommend for a newbie that has never done video editing before?

mainly i just want to add music, cut certain scenes, add text.. etc..

Thanks all!

I'm in the same boat, just started trying to do some video editing.

So far, i've only tested Adobe Premiere (they have a 30 day trial for download!) and it seems pretty good except it took me 1/2 hour just to work out that transitions are only applied when you finish.. it does all you said, except for the text thing.. haven't worked out that bit yet.

I use Adobe Premiere 6.0 but I also have a Certificate in Adobe Photoshop so that helped a bit. It does take a while of getting used to but yuo don't have to use all of the features in it. Yeah, it's damn annoying that you can't see the transations, plus they don't always come out exactly as you had hoped!

I want to find a feature in there for reversing plaback on some clips, anyone know if it has this?

The easiest video editing program I have found is Windows Movie Maker but unfortunately this is an integral part of ME & XP so you would have to be running one of those.

Try studio 7...it's really easy to use...(drag and drop) and has some really nifty transitions.

plus you can add music or whatever audio you need...very simple program

I've been using Ulead Media Studio Pro 6.0 for a while now, it wasn't hard for me to learn at all. Video editing on a PC is not very fun. Editing on a Mac is so much easier as everything is rendered in real time (at least with the program i was using). Just get some program, and start messing around with it, try different things, and you'll figure out what your doing soon enough.
