We will be switching over to Cingular in couple of days and decided to get Moto V551 phones. I will be traveling to Europe in late July/early August and would like to take it with me to use local pre-paid sims. Cingulat rep told me that I can have it unlocked by them, but only after 90 days of contract, but I need it done sooner then that. I asked them if it is against their TOS to have it unlocked myself and they said it is not explicitly prohibited, so I should be OK in that regard.

Anyhow, searching the Google I find lots of places that charge $20-50 for the unlock code, ouch! Is there a cheaper/easier way to do it?

MODS, I aplologize in advance if this post is not allowed.

Take it to cingular and show them your plane ticket and ask them what they can do for you. You might get a CSR that's feeling nice and they'll help you.

Otherwise, you can probably pick up a cheap, old phone off ebay or something.

I just got an unlocked v551 brand new from ebay.
What will you pay for the phone with a contract?
You can buy an new unlocked v551 on ebay for around 150-200.

How about -$75?

There is one HUGE drawback (for me at least) you can not port your existing phone number to Cingular if buying through Amazon.

Cingular
Cingular and Amazon.com have not yet established a method for customers to transfer their current number to a new Cingular account. Unfortunately, in order to port your previous number, Cingular will cancel the account that Amazon.com activated and will activate a new account with the ported number. This process makes you ineligible for the Amazon.com rebates. We hope to offer a porting option in the coming months, so please check back.

Wow... I had no idea

If it's a Cingular branded phone, it already is unlocked... unless they changed their policy within the last 12 months, that's how they come.
