What is the easiest/cheapest legal way to dispose of computer monitors?

I have a small collection of non-working monitors that I would like to get rid of. Is there anyplace that will take them off my hands without charging me?

go to a cliff and dump them into the ocean

ok, bad idea. the garbage dump around here doesn't mind if you bring them broken monitors. Just go find a rural landfill instead of an urban one, and u'll probably get away with it.

Take them out into the woods and shoot them! :D
That's the most fun you can have with a bad CRT.

Soak them in some crude oil(to get rid of the bad thingies that are in them), pee all over them, and take them to the middle of the ocean and "splash!"......

:Q;)

That's a local issue. I know in my town, it's illegal to just toss computer parts in the trash. CRTs can explode if you break them, and there is often talk of mercury and other bad chems that can leech out of PCBs.
Check your regs before you just toss them, or you might get tossed a fine.

I'd say convert them to fish tanks, but I dunno how :)

Fish tanks! That is an excellent idea. I think I might try that on some old monitors we have.

Any resident computer geek would be happy to take them off your hands and attempt to fix them. :)

The State of California recently determined that discarded televisions and computer monitors are classified as hazardous waste, unless properly recycled by a state licensed facility. This means that it is illegal to dispose of a computer monitor or television (TV) by putting it in the regular trash or in a dumpster.

Other states have followed through. Sorry I don't have a list of all places. So yes, it is ILLEGAL to toss it in a dumpster in many locations.

I tossed two CRT's (A TV & an old CGA monitor) into a landfill. I made sure to toss them directly in front of the CAT they had rolling around. They made a satisfying pop when they got ran over.
