they both look pretty similar just looking at the specs, but there's definitely the obvious price difference. So what does $40 extra get you?

Well you could scan the MSI website, but I did it for you.

4 more USB ports
Dual LAN jacks
an extral firewire port

Those are the only things I could tell from the product page.

Also, the second SATA controller is SATA2 on the platinum. I didn't need 2 sets of SATA2 controllers, so I went with the non-platinum.

Redunancy is always nice if you're on a wired connection. I have wireless, so no use to me. :D

I didn't need the dual LAN, but I went with the Platinum for the extra SATA ports and onboard IEEE 1394. After MIR, it was only around $15 more than the F model.
