What is the difference between Nasdaq, NYSE, Dow Jones, AMEX?

Are they just groupings of different company's stocks?

Yes, there are characteristics of each index too.

Like Dow Jones 30 is the largest company in each sector.
Nasdaq has lots of tech stocks.

Dunno any defining characteristics to AMEX or NYSE.

I believe they have different standard of selecting members into their community.

They all measure market performance with different collections of stocks.

NYSE is the medium in which stocks are traditionally traded (New York Stock Exchange).

NASDAQ is a totally electronic stock exchange, the NYSE is the major, mostly blue-chip exchange, the Dow Jones are 30 stocks that the company of the same name picks as indicative of major companies, and the AMEX is a smaller and more mid-cap exchange.

Trading on insider info is a big no-no. Get you jail time and big fine.

Dow Jones is NOTHING like NASDAQ, AMEX or NYSE. is just a goup of companies selected by the Dow Jones Company as a Yardstick to measure the NYSE.

NASDAQ is a stock exchange and they are primarily newer companies. Most startups start listed in NASDAQ.

NYSE is the Stock exchange for more mature companies. Getting listed in NYSE is a big deal for american companies.

AMEX, i forgot what the AMEX was, i believe it is located in Chicago whereas the other two are in NY.
