I don't use either, but when I start Windows Messenger in XP, it says MSN Messenger at the bottom...

Both are interoperable with each other and I think have pretty much all the same features except for the check hotmail plugin for the MSN version. Windows Messenger which comes with XP doesn't have ads though.

The primary difference is that Windows Messenger can logon to a special Communications Service, in addition to logging on to .NET servers (Passport).

The secondary difference is that MSN Messenger can be installed on all operating systems since Win98, while Windows Messenger is only available for XP (at this time).

Otherwise, the UI is a bit different, and XP is the only OS that can run and logon both at the same time. Also, NetMeeting invites can only be done on MSN Messenger, and only on non-XP operating systems, while both can do videoconferencing invites on XP.

There are a few other minor things here and there, kinda confusing...

windows messenger is a messenger to talk to people on a LAN, originally. A Network admin would send a message to all the computers with updates or if the server might go down or of the sort. Now it's used for spam.

You have confused Windows Messenger with Windows Messaging Service.

Windows Messaging Service is something like you have described, except spammers can't penetrate LANs with sufficient firewalls and other security measures, so it is still used for what it was originally designed for. Windows Messenger is an instant messaging app, like yahoo, aim and what not.

You would be incorrect. A simple search of this forum, as well as hundreds of others, will reveal quite a few people who confuse MSN Messenger with Windows Messenger, simply because both are instant messaging utilities, and both are released by a single company, but with different names and slightly different variances of utility.

Also, there's no such thing as "Windows Messaging Service for Windows messenger"
