What is the difference between generic and name brand drugs?

If the active ingredient is the same - what incentive is there to buy the name brand? Coating? Taste? Color? Anything?

There is not supposed to be much difference. The FDA (in the US) requires that the Generic Drug company demonstrate bioequivalence of their drug versus the name brand. The "Filler" materials could be different.

My ex-wife had a serious allergic reaction to a generic drug once, so they switched her to the brand name and she was fine. She must have been allergic to one of the fillers or something. Since that incident she refuses to take generics.

The active ingredient is identical. Coatings and inactive ingredients may differ.

i.e. always buy store brand ibuprofen and acetominofen

Filler

heh - I mean what is the point? To make the pill larger?

Most likely. When you only have .2g of something in a pill, you want to make it a little larger so you don't have this tiny little pills.

To make it larger, to bind it together, to coat it, etc

Allow it to be compressed easily, allow the powder to flow evenly, mask taste, extend release of active

That would be the "etc." I was speaking of. :p

More importantly, the quality control of generic and OTC drugs is less than that of a brand name prescription. These drugs may have a variety of manufacturers, and there may be a difference in dosage or release rate of the drug, within a certain range allowed by the FDA. In general, I'd go with the generic drug, but if I were dependent on a particular medication, I would certainly pay attention to the effectiveness of a generic vs name brand.

Yep as other have said if its the same ing. then just the filler part.

The FDA REQUIRES that a generic act and perform the same as the name brand on the illness it is approved for. So a generic has to be tested to show it performs the same as the other. Look for a company called PPD as they test drugs for companies. I did one for a basic drug and made maybe $800 and got some free food. I think I got the placbo but still got the money.

Bio drugs are what companies are moving toward now. Not only is it just about impossible to make the SAME "drug" you also have to get equipment and prcess's that are protected by the orignal maker to make it. One place gets 10k for a dose of med for MS and that is what they charge the outlets, not the user. Of course that meant we, I worked there, got soda fountains in the break rooms, popcorn day, breakfast day every other friday, etc...

So yea all my ibuprofen and other over the counter drugs are store/generic brand.

the tylenol with the laser holes drilled into the capsule is so much better than generic gelcaps.
