What is the difference between dual cone speakers and the ones that have tweeters.

I installed a pair of $20 Pioneer 6x9 speakers in my car (in the rear), and they sound awesome. However they do seem to lack in the high treble (they seem to be more mid range with treble).

So my question is what is the difference between dual cone (which is what that speaker was I think) and the seperate tweeter ones? I am going to replace teh front speakers with something that has its own tweeter. The rear ones will stay as it is.

I bought those 20 dollar speakers from Best Buy (they had a sale this weekend right?)..

Dual cone speakers rely on one driver to do the work of two. They use a cone shaped piece of paper to direct and disperse the high frequencies, although by design their abilty to do it is severely limited.

A 2 or 3 way speaker actually has different drivers, for various frequencies (woofer, mid, tweeter) The sound frequencies are seperated by a crossover of some sort to direct the proper frequencies to the proper driver.

You talking about speakers with a "wizzer" cone? :D Stupid wizzer cones do jack :p 2/3-way speakers aren't perfect either because they don't have a real crossover, they just have bipolar caps which help filter the lows from going to the tweeters (but don't filter the highs from going to the woofer). Better are component sets with a physically detached tweater and dedicated crossovers...

I'm sure viperoni will be along shortly to bash my post and state something better :)

I used to have "dual cone" speakers in the front of my car, but then I bought some nice 6.5" clarions w/ a crossover. The tweeters were removable so I mounted them on the doors and they sound awesome!

I think the main difference is that the woofer doesn't distort the treble coming from the tweeter. Highs sound really good if you use a crossover and seperate tweeters.

IMO (and that of car audio nerds I've talked to), 6x9s are just a marketing scam. The shape of them does NOT compliment the sound quality - basically you can get way better sound with 6.5" round speakers. This is just what I've heard and noticed, so I could be wrong of course.
