What is the difference between an Athlon 64 and 64 FX-53?

The FX requires the Opteron chipset and socket 940 and registered memory. It will be slower than a 939 socket setup at the same clock speed and cache.

well i noticed that. but i was looking at the specs and there didn't seem to be much difference. i was just curious what justified the higher price.

What higher price ? I haven't seen a price on a 939 chip yet. You can't compare the socket 754.

Then go look at the benchmarks. For those two which exist today, the FX is the fastest CPU you can buy today (in games), and very close if not the winner in many other things (except encoding).
