what is the difference between 2 cores and 4 cores on cpu?

i want to know what is the differnce between 2 vs 4 cores on cpu?

does it make it faster if i get e8400 vs. q6600? i know that e8400 is 3.0ghz and q6600 is 2.4ghz?

It all depends on your software. If you use multi-threaded software like video encoders, 3d rendering programs, etc... then a 4 core CPU will almost always be faster because it has twice the execution resources of a dual core CPU. For less threaded programs like most games, then raw MHz will be of more benefit.

Quad-core processors are suited for use with multi-threaded apps--usually image or 3d-editing programs. Newer games like Crysis and Supreme Commander also take advantage of all four cores.

Some people still recommend a dual-core over a quad-core for gaming, but for the most part a quad-core is sufficient. A little overclocking can eliminate that possible bottleneck, anyway. Just remember that it'll produce twice as much heat as a dual core at the same speed.

I personally chose the Q6600 and I'm very happy with it.

If you're just playing content then the Q6600 might not offer you much. If you're doing heavy-duty recording and editing of the video that's coming in to the HTPC, as many people are, then the Q6600 would be better.

The other thing that you have to keep in mind is that an HTPC is ideally supposed to be a very quiet machine. For that reason some people choose to go with the lowest-power processor they can to make it easier to cool quietly. (Enormous coolers don't always fit inside cases designed for HTPCs.) The E8400 uses less power than the Q6600, thanks to fewer cores and a process shrink.
