What is the difference b/w Pentium M, and Pentium 4 M?

Pentium M is the true mobile, low power consumption, low wattage processor chip. These are the ones you see in the Centrino packages. They are very efficient for their GHz rating and would blow a similarly rated Pentium-4-M out of the water both performance-wise and battery-life-wise. The Pentium-4-M is basically a regular desktop Pentium 4 that was converted, with a lot less thought and success than the Pentium-M, into a mobile chip.

I think I've heard something like a Pentium-M 1.7GHz will outperform a 2.5GHz Pentium 4 M or something like that. Oh yeah, the Pentium M also has 1MB of cache, compared to the Pentium 4 M which is like 512kb I think.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
 
According to Anand's tests, the new 1.8Ghz Dothan (the chip with the 2MB cache) is actually faster than a A64 3000+ in UT2004, and performs competitively in the other gaming benchmarks

So the 1.8GHz P-M is probably equivalent to a 3.2GHz Northwood in gaming that has almost twice the clock speed advantage and that is no small feat.
 
OK, thanks for the quick replies. One more ques. I am getting the 1.7 Dothan, so would that be about the same as an A64 3000?
 
The fastest dothan performs faster than Intel's desktop 3.4 prescott 🙂 You'll be happy with that dothan, it should perfomr better than even the 3000+
 
I assume youll be running thisin a Laptop because there are currentlyh no M/Bs available for desktop use and also doesn't the Pentium-M's cost like 700$.

I have a Pentium 4 M chip, 2.0Ghz, that someone gave to me some time ago from a broken (smashed screen) laptop that was his.

Been meaning to try to get a desktop board to put it in. I have a different friend, with a Sager-OEM'ed laptop, with a desktop 2.4 Northwood P4 inside, needless to say, it overheats very easily while under load. We tryed to swap the P4M 2.0 into it, but the problem is, the P4M has *no heatspreader* like the desktop chips, and therefore won't even reach the heatsink on the laptop. (We didn't even attempt to turn it on with that situation.)

So basically, what I can I do with this chip? where can I find a good replacement heatspreader, and can I use it in any other desktop systems, or systems designed for a desktop chip? I think that this chip may actually have 1MB L2 cache in it too, not sure. I have the s-spec around here somewhere.
 
i doubt your 2.0 p4m has 1 mg of L2... only the banias and dothans have 1 meg of L2 and p4m's are northwoods with 512 kb L2
 
VirtualLarry, you may be able to make a spacer for the P4M to use in that laptop or use it in a desktop board. One problem you may find is that I think P4M chips default to 12x multiplier in a desktop board (don't know about the laptop that uses the desktop CPU).
