What is the deal with modern cell phones?

Call me a traditionalist, but man. Some of the phones they have these days are a freaking joke. I went in the other day to pick out a replacement and found out that they had replaced my favorite big yellow brick motorola phone with a slightly smaller model. I love the yellow brick. It's designed with construction workers in mind. Which is why I like it. I have a habit of breaking them otherwise.

Heck, I'm even now seeing cell phones that are so darned tiny that you need a special pen just to dial someone's number and a magnifying glass just to read the tiny little display! Yet people keep buying them! Why do people buy these? They buy cell phones with games on them, cameras, and who knows what else. A cell phone to me is just that. A portable cellular phone. Not a multimedia entertainment center. Why do people buy these? Well, for that matter, what kind of phone do you like/have? I wouldn't mind my yellow brick having a color display, but if not, what I have is just fine.

This is the phone I have. The old faithful yellow brick. Otherwise known as the Motorola i700 plus!

Ok, just out of curiousity, can I ask why? I fear small phones. Reference the "I tend to break things" notation. Hence why I got the yellow brick. 😀

I've got a nokia 3360 and just like it due to the fact it doesn't have an external antenna to break off, and it fits in my pocket with ease!

Sure. I want a small phone that's easy to put in my pocket. I couldn't imagine having to carry a brick around. My current phone is considered "large" but its fine for me and has all the bells & whistles🙂 (Sanyo 5300)

I'd say because cell phones are so common now and which phone you have is a fashion statement. I personally have the Samsung S105 atm. O ya and it was free after all the wheeling and dealing was done.

actually the smaller ones seem to be tougher...I have a moto t720 that has taken more abuse than my nokia ever could...but for most people they just want something thats not big and bulky

Look into some Motorola phones. I know with a lot of them you can walk right into the store, snap it in half in front of them and say give me a new phone and they will.

Samsung S105.. very small color screen multimedia center phone..

I like it because it is small and it is a flip phone so I don't accidentally call all the A's over and over in my phonebook.

Why the hell is the menu on it so slow? I swear, it's like waiting for Windows just to navigate my phone.

That's interesting, because I destroyed my little nokia in record breaking time (my first cell phone) and then when I switched to Nextel I got the i700 plus and I have yet to even scratch the darned thing and I'm going on 2 years of continual abuse! :Q

oh...the rubber ducky was a tough phone...and there are still some made to take abuse...but the small ones just seem to break apart (battery cover comes off, sim card falls out) to disperse the force...thats IMHO of course

i hear the Sanyo phones are really a gem

they look big and bulky, but the ergo is perfect. they have a long battery life, color screen, and real good reception.. its a good 'mature' phone

i agree, these new phones are ridiculous. camera on a phone? please. who uses that. especially all these new funky NOKIA phones with the numbers layed out like a ROTARY or a TRIANGLE.. its ridiculous

i must admit tho that i bought my cell phone mainly for style and its key are TINY and is difficult to dial with (motorola v70)

oooh....v70 is a nice phone!!! if you want to get rid of it let me know 🙂

I don't presume that the majority of cell phone users are construction workers. Thus, they probably don't need indestructible models. In fact, I'd guess the demand is for smaller phones with many features, since that's what's in the stores.

Myself, I've got a Motorola Timeport (flip phone). It's pretty basic for features, but, works great as a cellphone. It's also rather compact, at least for it's time. I'd like to upgrade eventually, really would like a pda and phone in one but not willing to pay that much for the features. I could care less about the digicam crap.

So, I'll stick with what I've got until my contract expires or it dies whatever comes first.

I'm with you LordRaiden, I want a durable phone that I can drop and not worry about it shattering like a glass sculpture. I don't care about playing snake or taking a damn picture. Internet is nice for sports scores but other than that - all that "extra" stuff isn't necessary for me.

I am still running my old motorola v66... I drop it couple times it's still in very good shape.. it shows that tiny phone doesn't mean easy break.. and my gf has a panasonic gd55.. very very small.. it's around 1/2 of regular Palm.

Amen to that! 😀

I have a LG5350(Sprint), and I like it. I like the clamshell design, and I like its color screen. I can talk and surf the web(connect it to a PC and surf, not that I do, but I could..😱). I don't want no stinking brick. I want it to be small, have color screen, surf the web, and I want to be able to fold my phone. LG 5350 isn't big, but it is a little thick. Also the construction of the phone is not as good as other models.

sure thing. if you have a budget of ~100, then you can just buy it off the amazon.com website and get the 150 back (from tmobile rebate, tho they take a WHILE!)... the other 100$ is for rebate, too, but i havent heard from the company that handles it :| (amazon's 3rd party rebate comp)

I hate small cell phones that aren't the flip style because the microphone tends to be far away from the mouth making it harder to talk. I wanna be able to hold my phone in one place while I talk dammit.

If you've ever seen Zoolander... someday we'll have phones like that, heh.

I sell cells among other things and every 4th person or so doesn't like having super-tiny phone that doesn't reach their mouths. I can understand that... personally I don't even used the carriers & phone that I sell.

My family only uses the ultra-light Panasonics right now EB series. Mainly because speakerphone is cool for driving with laws now and I hate heavy phones. They're non-flip but long enough to be near my mouth.
