What is the deal with clicking on...

I have my first little LAN setup. My g/f and I each have our own internet connection and then we each have another NIC for the LAN. It works great and files fly right between computers. I can even seed a bit torrent file from her computer through my internet connection. THAT was an added bonus.

The problem is once about every 3-4 clicks of My Network Places from a My Computer window results in the window no longer responding and me doing a restart to get full desktop functionality (show desktop buttons, certain sys tray icons disappear, etc.) back and working. She doesn't have this issue.

XP SP 2 on both
new custom built x-over cable for us to share
She is using a PCI NIC and I have an onboard Nvidia Controller NIC. We both run PCI NIC's for internet.

?AMD in both boxes?

What other info is needed?

network browsing is still a very dark art. Did you sacrifice a virgin goat before browsing?

best bet when this happens is to not reboot, but just open task manager, kill the "explorer" process (if it's running) and then go to the applications tab and click "new" and type in "explorer"

my guess is her routes are messy, and she is responding to your browse request on her other NIC.

Why not use the computer name to access the remote computer like \\secondcomputer from run? Then you don't have to worry about the computer not showing up in network neighborhood or the window taking a long time to open. I also think unchecking file and print sharing from the internet network card properties would also help for security and internal network browsing.
