what is the deal with Athlon FX and registered ram

however, according to AMD, athlon FX series are supposed to use registered ddr ram.

so... is regular DDR dimms obsolete? what will happen if i use a regular unregistered dual channel kit with an athlon FX?

940 FX requires registered DDR RAM
939 FX requires regular unregistered DDR RAM

You have 940 pin FX-51 and FX-53 (original workstation and server chipset)
You have 939 pin FX-53 and FX-55 (newer mainstream and low end workstation chipset)

940 pins = registered ddr dimms
939 pins = regular ddr dimms

You're information is incomplete. You will use regular unregistered dimms with your 939 motherboard (the vast majority of non server and dual cpu market) FX processors

Even though Ecc ram has more latency it does have some very nice advantages. There will be alot less memory errors this can be important in O/C but the fact is O/Cers don't worry all that much about memory errors. Because the first FX 51 was in reality an opty.cpu 940 pin it required Ecc Memory. Amd fixed that in short order with the 939 pin FX 53 cpu.

You mix up ECC and registered/buffered which are two different concepts.

Socket 754 and 939 can use ECC but must not have registered RAM.

Socket 940 required RAM to be both ECC and registered.
