I ' ll put my bet on an IBM X 22,why ? Well though I own a Thinkpad R50e which ranks awesome for the money in mybook, but after I have seen my friend's X22 which he got for under $ 300 I have been tempted to own one in addition to my R50e, I like it just for the hell of composite matrial goodness( and small size) it , for the sake of old IBM times.
So what old laptop would you buy "just for the hell of it" ?

Oooh...fun question!

Choice 1:
Powerbook "duo" 230c. This was essentially the world's first attempt at a thin-and-light laptop. They were great for their time.

Choice 2: iBook Fruity or Snow.
The iBook fruity is just plain nifty. (they've also got a rep for durability.) The Snow iBook can be turned into a clear iBook with a bit of paint thinner, and it can even be repainted from the inside.

Choice 3:
"Butterfly" keyboard IBM ThinkPad 701c.
The butterfly keyboard RULES. I would know, I own one of these. (Sadly, it just died.)

EDIT:
Unless you're doing word processing and nothing more, only the Snow iBook makes any sense. If you want a functional laptop, I'd go for one of the old PIII based Toshiba thin-and-light notebooks. They're usually only about 4lbs, and one of the old 600 class notebooks could be had for something like 200$ or less.

Sony Z505 series. I had one of those and i really loved it. It was small, cute, and attracted a lot of attention, expecially from girls!!, also it handled XP and did word fine, It was just lacking on video card, but a laptop that small shouldnt be used to play games on anyhow~. It did play Starcraft BW fine, and even diablo2 to some degree. However it finally died on me and i got a T41 to replace it. But AHHH~ if they only made sony laptops as durable as IBM's i would of gotten another sony. :[

If IBM didn't exist. I can see myself buying a Sony, but other than that it's big blue for me ;).

I've had every ThinkPad - Literally!! Since the 755 CDV, and the Butterfly 701c. I'm probably one of the few guys here that has touched and used every model and have carried most of them at one time in my career with me.

My vote goes to the ThinkPad 600/600x.

I think that that the IBM Thinkpad Transnote beats the butterfly in innovation.

The TransNote is okay, but I think it looks really awkward. Doesn't have the flair of the Butterfly's folding keyboard. Plus it was in Mission Impossible. :D

EDIT: Apparently it was also in GoldenEye. It's a veritable movie star!

either an old powerbook, or one with one of those little thumbstick cursor controller thingies that are set into the keyboard.

Toshiba Libretto 70... Had one of those a while ago, great for a student lappy. I hear they make a new version now though I have no use for one.

Posting right now from a Powerbook G3 Wallstreet.

Upgrade path:

Add 512 (max) RAM
DVD
20GB HD
Jaguar

This will be my everyday laptop. This will hold me over until the X86 ibooks are out and proven stable.

The old Librettos were sweet. My little brother used to own one. Not terribly powerful, but it was no larger than a palmtop.

Of course, it's neigh impossible to actually type on the @$@#$ keyboard.

On the subject of the 701 butterfly... I submitted it because it's OLD. The "transnote" is not old.

No love for the Latitude LS? Got mine off eBay for $65 + $35 replacement LCD ribbon cable. Smaller than a 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper, three pounds with battery and magnesium alloy casing. :D Only drawback on it is 800x600 max screen resolution, it isn't that bad however with the L400 that was taken care of.

Yeah, I wrote my dissertation on the damn thing. All nighters were made all the rougher for the shear range of typos that keyboard could support.
