Hi, I am looking to buy a new car in this area. What is the most problem-free but also cheapest way of buying?

i would go to an auction .. probably an insurance auction .. you can get great deals there....oh and just letting you know this probably shouldn't belong in the hot deals forum... and if you go to an auction look for a good body shop before you go

Test drive the cars you're interested in at the local dealerships. Decide on the car you want to buy. Check out edmunds.com. Approximately figure out what you should be paying for the car. Then call a car dealer in Southern California. Cars are whole lot cheaper there. Fix up a deal with them. They will deliver the car to your doorstep. I've heard that dealers in souther cal ship cars to silicon valley on a routine basis. Or you could save an extra couple of hundred bucks and go down to LA and pick up the car yourself.

You can ALWAYS save money by driving out into the boonies somewhere and buying from a dealership that sells a whole 3 cars a year or something like that. That is what we did with one of the cars we purchased, saved a couple grand off the price the downtown dealership was charging.

what my boss did 2 years ago:

Flew one way to Oregon (might have been Washington) which did not have sales tax.
Purchased a porsche boxster and drove it back down.
Make sure its compliant with Cali smog regulations (very strict).

If you buy a car in cali, sales tax is 8.25% which is around $4000 for $50K.

yup good ole oregon..no tax and worth it for makign a big purchase like a car....they get this ALL the time, so they do good volume, and have good deals too (but they KNOW you are saving 7-8% and arent just going to give you ALL of that..they want their cut too, in the form of a slightly higher price!!)

Thats bs. anyone who knows about interstate laws knows that when you buy a car, they charge sales tax according to your zipcode of the billing address, usually they see your drivers licence and look at that zip. It was a law passed years ago because people were doing exactly what you said, going to dealerships with lower tax rates, putting local dealerships out of business.
