Now, I don't like the prices of anything going up, but:

If you're the average driver out there, you are driving about 12K mi. a year.

That's 230 miles a week.

If your car/whatever gets 18 miles to the gallon, you're using almost 13 gallons of gas a week.

If $2.00/gal. is bad and $1.50/gal. is good then you're spending an extra $6.50 a week for these outrageous prices.

Maybe you drive 24K a year, then you're out $13 a week more.

Is anyone taking a big financial hit because of the extra $13 coming out of your pocket?

If you're getting 8 mi./gal. and driving 35K miles a year, well then, you're just an idiot.

Well, like you said, its not a huge financial problem weekly, but 13 a week adds up, and some people rely on their car for their job, so all that driving adds up.

Doesn't USA still pay the lowest in gas prices compared to the world anyway? Canadians must envy our prices.

It's honestly not that bad, if you're driving a regular car - or even better, if you drive a hybrid. Who's really hurting is those people with the 12-MPG gas-guzzlers.

I usually pay around $15 for a fillup, and now I'm paying $20. One tank lasts me about two weeks. $5 isn't really that bad, when it comes down to it.

Edit: Japan is around 115-120 yen a liter, which translates to roughly around $4 a gallon.

I don't really pay attentiont o gas prices.. its something i need, and have no control over the price so i pay what it is and try not to gripe too much about it.. but..

FYI.. 13/week = 676 a year.. thats not small change :) If you feel like it is then You could put $10/week away for me and mail it to me please?

So before everybody jumps in and screams how inflationary this will be affecting prices for virtually everything.
Consider this, the fed is considering raising interest rates to 'cool' the economy. with rising fuel prices they won't need to to do this so the cost of borrowing will be lower so mortgages and car loans will be cheaper for all.
If they raised the prime lending rates I would pay more for any loans I had out. I can choose to buy or not buy gas I can't choose what loan rate I will get.

Not really, prices in Canada are very similar (after adjusted for the exchange and the fact that they pay by the liter).
The oddest thing about Canadian gas (and my recent experience is only from British Columbia mind you) is that they only have 1 grade (89 octane or what would be mid-grade in the US) and it is the same price at every gas station on any given day. Seriously, every gas station in Vancouver or Victoria would have the exact same price. Wierd.

Anyway, we already had this EXACT same discussion the other day. Repost

The Fed and the Prime Rate do not control conventional mortgage rates. Those are affected by the yield on the 10 year Treasury Bond, which has already gone up 1% since mid-March, and mortgage rates along with it.
In addition, rising energy prices (read: rising gas prices) are one of the inflationary issues that has the Fed looking into raising the funds rate.
In other words, rising gas prices won't keep your interest rates down.

Thats VERY different here in Toronto. I can go around the corner and get gas at 89.5 a litre or i can go a few more miles and get it at 83.4.. and the gas stations I go to tend to have 3 different grades.

I started this exact same thread yesterday, but the calculations I did came out to $5/week rather than $6.50/week.

The average driver may not notice it over the course of a wekk or even a month. Being that I am not an average driver the prices are killing me. THe average cost of a fill-up for me is $150-170 depending on where I stop and how low I am. Figure every 2 days I have to fill up and you see the pirce is very noticeable. The truck does average 18 MPG so that is the only saving grace of it all.

I could finance a new laptop if I was getting that extra $13 a week.

I kept rounding up, just to keep myself honest.

The story of my life a dollar short and a day late.

That's crap too.

Anyone driving a vehicle getting 12-mpg would most likely be driving a $60k+ Hummer, Escalade, Navigator, etc..and when you can afford such a vehicle it makes a very small difference in their finances in what you're paying at the pump.

And you are an ass, what about the tow truck I have to keep filled ?

8 M.P.G. and it racks up 300 to 400 miles per week.
