I want to experiment with one of the $2 dash cam apps. I see a bunch of windshield mounts available. is there a clear favorite for this? Many appear to block the camera because the intent is to use them as GPS.

It is relative, if it's worth the $50.

To me, yes ... I can use it while off roading in the Xterra, and worked great on all the road trips I have taken throughout the US and Europe.

Sticks to anything and doesn't bounce :)

Curious, how do you think it would work *outside* a car, in the wind? (serious question ;))

I use the tomtom gps dock, you can find it cheap now, works with 3g/3gs/4/4s.

1. you charge as you record
2. it doesn't block camera as I use it for my recordings
3. it doubles as gps enhancer and if you have the tomtom app it'll give you better gps signals, i believe it works with any gps app

I'm using this one: Griffin WindowSeat 3. It will fit phones with thick cases on.

It's adjustable so that it will work with a variety of phones (iPhone 4/4S, 5, Samsung Galaxy S2, Motorola Droid X2 and others).

I used a coupon code to get 20%. PM me if you want it. I think posting coupon codes on AT has been banned years ago?

Yeah that's what I'm looking for - I haven't been able to find a good clamped suction-cup arm-mount for my phone for exterior usage. All of the GoPro ones don't use standard 1/4-20 mounts, and my pro-camera suction cup system isn't quite as articulate as the adjustable ones like this (plus it won't fit on motorcycles!). I'll have to snag one & give it a try, thanks!

Honestly, i use the elastic strap from a $3 armband to hold my iPhone 5 to the headrest of the passenger seat. Works fine.

EDIT* I also checked the app store for some dashcam apps, and there is one called iSymDVR that is currently free. It does not have on screen speed but is only in version 1.10 and they say in the description that 1.11 will have on screen speed display. Its only free until Oct 20, I figure get it now for free and when they add speed, you'll get it as an upgrade. This could be a huge cover your ass if you are in an accident that is not your fault, or are pinched for speeding when you were not speeding.

The date stamp and other things that show up on the screen on this one do not appear in the video when played back on that one i mentioned above... which i thought odd. Just FYI

I use the Aduro U-Grip Plus (available at Amazon) with good results. I live in hot and sunny Florida and leave the mount attached to the windshield all the time. I place it high on the windshield, near the mirror (left of center) behind the windshield tint strip. I place my iphone 4S (in an Otterbox) in the U-Grip and slide it to the left which virtually eliminates any blockage of the camera's view. The U-Grip holds the phone firmly. There might be better mounts out there but this works for me. It's only $20. BTW, It can also mount on the dash but since I have a black dash it gets VERY hot. Nonetheless I might give that positioning a try.
