I'm wanting to run a network to my garage, and would like to have it placed underground, but I'm not sure the best way to go about this....

If it is not underground rated cable, I would put it in a metal or PVC conduit.

Nominally a run of 100 meters is OK. Here are the specs for all kinds of cables. Scroll down for latency.

If you are going to run it underground, I would suggest the use of
Shielded CAT 5 cable .. it has much heavier outer jacket and better
wires ... it also has a ground drain ... this is good for a number of
reasons, interference immunity being one of them ... I would put
it in a plastic conduit from the home to the garage

You can usually get it a major electrical supply house

This site sells a 1000 ft box for only $160

http://www.cablewholesale.com/catalog/cat5estpcables.htm ... part #10X6-521TH

Note: Shielded CAT 5 requires a Special Connector

http://www.tessco.com/products/displayProductInfo.do?sku=441602&eventPage=1 .. part #441602

Shielded cat 5 is almost the same diameter as RG59 tv coax and as such, will not fit into a normal
size RJ45 connector ... installation is the same, just takes more pressure on the crimper

Running through a conduit also allows you to replace the cable later without digging again. If you also pull a single 14ga stranded wire (or 1/8" nylon cord) through with it, and leave it in place, you will have an easy way to add another cable (of whatever type) to the conduit later should you ever need to.
