What is the best way to normalized MP3s?

I have several MP3s of different volume levels what is the best way to normalized them?

Can you normalize mp3s? Or do you have to choose normalize when you are ripping and encoding from a .cda or .wav file??

I would think that it would have to be done at the process of ripping or it would be a pretty difficult task, and it would not be perfect!

I guess you could decode the .mp3 files back to .wav with Winamp or EAC, and then re-encode them using normalization. I don't know how good they would sound after that, though. I would think they wouldn't sound as good as the original .mp3 file. I'm just guessing, though.

the best way to normalize them at this stage is to change your volume. When it gets loud, turn it down and when it gets too quiet, turn it up. There is usually a little knob on the square enclosure your sound comes out of. It'll say volume above it. Most turn to the right to increase the sound levels and vice versa. Hmmm...is there any software out there to 'normalize' people too? 😉

Musicmatch Jukebox will do normailization (they call it volume leveling) to mp3 files.

really I agree with you what a jerk! I personally though that this question was very interesting and there was by far no need to flame the guy! So get a life buddy!

lol wow some people can't take tounge in cheek well.

The point being that at this point, he can either go through each mp3 he has, decompress it into wav, and normalize it back into mp3 compression.

Even as you said, DD, "it would be a pretty difficult task, and it would not be perfect" ... so to save himself the aggravation, just change the volume.

Is GMU offering an MP3 class yet? I'd expect them to offer something like that long before anyone else (at least in these parts). Too bad I didn't catch on to MP3s until after I left Fairfax. 🙁

there is at least one WinAmp plugin that does this 'on-the-fly'.

Also mp3gain supposedly does this to entire directories of MP3's. I haven't tried it, so I can't vouch. You might want to try it on some test copies of MP3s before you subject your entire collection to it. It claims to be lossless.

I think that there are other such programs too.
