What is the best way to learn Spanish?

For my degree I have to take two semesters of a sophomore foreign language, and since I live in Texas, Spanish would probably be the most prudent choice. I am a total beginner, whats the best way to start out? I would like to have a good base before I begin taking the classes at school.

I have seen several different language learning kits. I saw one that said it was the official training used by the government for foreign service personnel. Would this be the best one? Are these things any good? Opinions?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Spanish speaking girlfriend. Seriously.

Or just get a decent grammar book to get a decent grasp of it, then just enrich the vocabulary.

Pimsleur's spanish courses are really great.

They'll teach you how to speak it in a more natural way.

You can always come to Miami as well 🙂

my high school was 94% Hispanic, 2% Afro-American, 4% others (anglos, asians, etc)
