What is the best way to cool an Opty165?

Just bought an Opty165 and a DFI LP UT SLI-DR. What is the best way to cool the processor so I can OC it to the 2.6-2.8 range (provided the chip I get will do that, of course)?

Can I use a nice heatsink/fan on the processor and multiple fans in the case? Or am I fooling myself and will just need to make the purchase of liquid cooling?

did you buy retail?

I would recommend a SI120, Ninja or big typhoon...see the cooling forum for HS reviews

you will have a very good chance of 2500, 2600 is good bet ..beyond this on a 165 is an awesome chip...there are some who have gotten dream chips hitting 2700-2800

my opteron 165@2610 may be up for sale in the next week..retail chip that does this speed at 1.46v on dfi dli dr and SI 120 with max load temps 46/48 after 15hrs of dual prime 95

Yeah, good air cooling will be fine.

The XP-90 seems to be a favorite for this chip. Easy to install, light, and does just as well ans any of the heavier and more expensive solutions. I run max-load overclocked temps of 40-45C with it.

I own both XP90 and SI 120..I have found the SI 120 a little easier to remove...

both work well

I hit 2655 with 1.4v using the retail stock HSF. Hell, I even used the thermal interface included on the HSF! I hit 2700, but I had to up the volts to 1.475, and the CPU started getting a little too warm for my liking (59 degrees). I've got some AS5 coming this week, so I'll see how that does with the stock cooler.

I think liquid cooling would be overkill and a needless expense if your goal is just 2.6. If you're really hoping for 2.8, well then you might have to look at liquid.

I can get to 3.0 with water, but you only really need water if the volts are going to be astronomical. Most of it depends on the stepping. Look at the unofficial opteron thread, and if you have any of their steppings, you can go just as high, and also look at their cooling. Bottom line = spend either 40 or 150, and temps will be the only difference.
