What is the best way to back up the registry?

I need a way to backup my registry in XP. System Restore has proved worthless to me. Many times I have put up restore points only to have them disappear.

I no longer want to install any of the secondary programs out there without backing up my registry and sooner or later a new virus always seems to find a way to get through the antivirus programs of which I have three installed.

Three AV programs? All running? That is probably part of the problem. You should only use one, otherwise they can fight one another.

System Restore is basically a copy of the Registry. But, you can also do it separately.

System Restore works fine, you should figure out what you're doing to cause the restore points to vanish.

I am using a program called "ERUNT" which is absolutely great. Its simple...and it saved my a$$ MANY times already. Its a little older, nevertheless works even under Win7 x64.

I third the motion for ERDNT. It is a program that originated with Microsoft and was on the install CD, but not on the 13 disk floppy set as I remember. In any case, it was not installed by default, so most users never knew about it.

As we evolved into the New Technology File System in about 2000, it was updated to work with the new file system, which is still in use today.

The only cavet on this program is that under Vista or Windows 7 you have to set it to run in Administrator Mode. This can be accomplished by setting its EXE file or the shortcut to Properties/Compatability/Run As Administrator. If you do not make this small change, it will fail on opening each of the registry's modules.

what i did with ERUNT:

In my startmenu i put a Shortcut which i name "BACKUP NOW" which runs

"C:\Program Files (x86)\ERUNT\ERUNT.EXE" "%SystemRoot%\ERDNT\#date# #time#"

So every time i run this it backups my registry "on demand" with a timestamp in the filename. Furthermore ERUNT also autobackups the registry at each Windows Start if there's no backup for that day already - so there's always three recent copies of the registry in that folder.

If i do some "testing"..i usually click on "backup now"...then screw around on the PC and i know i always have registry backup. And the restore is extremely simple also..you just click on the ERDNT.exe.....and you can also restore from DOS. It just works, it's great.

As others have noted, you've got problems if restores keep disappearing, and you have the need for multiple registry backups.

Oh..you have an idea..there are zillions of ways why restores might be disappearing....disk defragmenting with 3rd party s/w would be one.

If a defrag tool is deleting restore points you need to remove that software and then hit the author of it with a clue-stick.
