I have a 2001 VW Passat GLX w/ 13,500 miles on it.

I would like some advice on how I can go about selling this car.

I'm going to place an ad in the local newspaper. Also going to post it in the FS forum at the VW forums.

Any other suggestions?

Everywhere you list the car for sale is going to cost you.

If you have a digicam I strongly suggest taking at least two (low res) pictures of the exterior and interior.

Try posting your car on autotrader.com and ebaymotors.com and post pics!

Also if you do find a buyer, I would recommend:
1) Disclose any problems you know about the car upfront.
2) Have them sign a BILL OF SALE with an "AS IS - NO WARRANTY" disclaimer.
3) Insist on receiving a cashier's check as payment (assuming you own the car and have it paid off).

I'm curious, why are you selling it?

I haven't paid it off completely.

I'm selling it off because I am leaving moving abroad.

Hmm. Guess it varies state to state. You can do it to an extent in FL, and you may/may not get a ticket. But if you leave it on the side of the road, the cops will leave a notice on your car and tell you if you dont move it by X day it gets towed. He's in oklahoma, so he might be able to do so.

How the hell did they ever pass a law that says you can't write "for sale" on your car? Shouldn't that be protected as freedom of speech?

who said it was illegal to write for sale on a car? I said it was illegal to leave a car in a parking lot to attempt to sell it.

park it off a road that gets a lot of commuter traffic.... then some poor shmuck will be driving into work (you want people with jobs) in his piece of sh!t (you want people would drive worse cars than the one you are selling) will see your car and call you.

Low Tech / Low Budget:
1. For Sale sign in window
2. Flyers on bulletin boards around town (if possible)
3. Local newspaper ad
4. VW Message Boards posts

High Tech / Higher Cost
1. Autotrader Listing
2. eBay Motors Listing
3. Cars.com listing (etc...)
4. Dealer trade-in (high cost because you geta lower price)

Ok, so, say you have your car that's for sale, and you rive it to the grocery store to get some milk, you can get a ticket for having it parked while you're inside?
