Budget is $200-$250 at the most.

Ati? Nvidia? also must be dual head with analog.

<edit> I ended up getting a FX5700SE which blows away the Radeon 7000SE for the given purpous. It was worth the $150 retail price this time. (works money) So the issue is resolved </edit>

With that budget, really all you can get is a "Gaming Class" card. No professional card, unless its ancient, will cost less than about $500. If thats the case, then NVIDIA cards are historically the best at OpenGL. In that case, I would pick up a 6600GT or a 6800NU. Just remember, that the accuracy that workstation cards deliver won't be there with these gaming cards, they're made for all out speed, rather than uber accuracy that workstation cards deliver.

Well the card that came with the Dell dual xeon Precision is a Radeon 7000 with 32mb or ram. I think just about any $200 card would be an improvement.

would a firegl be better? what about matrox?

Nvidia is a must for opengl as of drivers and that why DOOM3 belongs to Nvidia 🙂

ATI are trying to made new drivers better on open gl though.

u could buy a 6800nu and use rivatuner to unlock the "professional" capabilities. so basically u turn in into a quadro

I would think a 6600GT is your best bet in that price range for OpenGL. Most have dual head, but you will need to use the DVI to D-sub on one of the outputs if you want dual analog. I don't think they make a dual analog cards in that price range anymore.

i agree with the 6600GT as the card of choice. The 6800 is better, but only like 10% or less, for 50% more cost. Also, there are several dual DVI 6600GTs, which are great for multiple monitor setups.

And nvidia owns openGL. No disrespect to ATI, they have better DX9 performance, but openGL is nvidia's bread and butter.
