Since you are running a S939 system already, a 7900GS would do nicely. It's probably not worth the $$$ or hassle to do a platform overhaul at this stage.

Yeah Opty 165s @ 2.8 - 2.9GHz is nice, but that's only equivalent to a ~2.4GHz C2D. For roughly the same price you can get an E6300 and O/C to 3 - 3.2GHz easily, often at stock volts as well. I'm aware good O/Cing boards from Intel add another $50 to the overall cost, but that's easily justified considering the extra performance.

For anybody buying a new dual core system and intending to overclock, I don't see how anybody could recommend AMD at this stage unless the budget was really tight.

I can see a potential market for X2 3600+/3800+s and a cheap $50 Asrock AM2 mobo, but other than that it's all Intel for dual core atm.

Intel currently has the mac daddy until AMD figures out how to utilize DDR2 into their architecture. As far as Beachboy's comments about his Asrock setup using regular DDR ram and an 850xt. It sounds pretty good, but I can't really comment on that because I have no experience with Asrock mobo's.

If you don't flinch at spending roughly $275 for 2x1gig sticks of name brand DDR2 800.
Go for it!!!!
I'm personally going to use current components (maybe buy a 7900gs) and try to hold out until DDR3 comes out. I have a sneakin suspicion this will happen in a year and a half.

btw, anybody building a system right now and using DDR2 533 is CRAZY.
(I'll try to keep the mr.obvious comments to myself from now on)

Actually, DDR2-533 on a C2D system is fine if you don't intend to overclock since it matches the stock FSB speed. Performance is only 2 - 5% lower than DDR2-800 levels - there is only a small benefit from running RAM faster than the FSB it seems.

On AM2 however, DDR2-800 is highly recommended - only at such speeds does it match a DDR400 S939 system. The step down to DDR2-533 results in a 10 - 20% performance drop across the board.

More info here:
http://anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.aspx?i=2800&p=7

People keep going on about the cost savings of an AM2 platform due to the cheaper mobos, but that is partly offset by the necessity of DDR2-800 RAM just to achieve good perfomance, whereas DDR2-533 is enough to achieve good performance on the C2D platform.

AMD doesn't need more memory bandwidth.. they need to utilize all the excess bandwidth they already have.

But they charge ridiculous shipping prices. It was $11 to ship to FL using the cheapest method. I can ship a boxed retail CPU for $7 USPS Priority mail, and I know eWis gets good UPS shipping discounts, so there's no reason for $11 shipping.

You can alternatively find the chip at buy.com for $134 with free shipping. Use google checkout and get $10 off that to make it $124 shipped. It's temporarily sold out, but it's been coming in and out of stock.
