What is the BEST usb pci-card?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a USB pci-card that is high performance, stable, low latency (responsiveness), and independant from the motherboard's usb chipset/bandwidth, with 2 or more channels. It will be exclusively used with high end audio devices, that is why it needs to be that good.

Current motherboard integrated usb ports are sometimes unstable, receive interference/slowdowns from other usb devices (like printer/keyboard/mouse/etc).

Any ideas/suggetions would be greatly appreciated.

Let me guess: the cables you plan to plug in cost 100 dollars per foot and are gold plated, and the equipment you're connecting has 2,000 dollar power cords connected, and it's all sitting on hand-crafted wooden blocks to isolate vibration from the ADC chips, and you've got 3rd-party wooden knobs installed?

Have you considered firewire?

There are USB solutions but 1394 seems more mature. What audio interface are you using currently?

Yes, I use firewire too, along with S/PDIF AES/EBU.

I just wanted to improve the performance of usb audio devices and eliminate issues coming from external usb devices, like hard drives, keyboard/mouse/etc, all connected at once.

Yes you would want to keep these high bandwidth devices on a sep controller if possible. Settings exist to limit USB bandwidth in Windows but I have not experiemented with them. ALi and NEC seem to be desirable over VIA chipsets. Another possibility is to use ESATA for HDD's. If the SATA controller is on PCI-E it totally frees up PCI bandwidth.

Asus K8N-E deluxe.

In theory, will PCIe improve latency/delay performance of a USB card? Bandwidth is good enough already.


Those PCI cards look good, I wonder which ALI chipset they're using. The latest one from ALI seems to be M5622. Any known cars which use this chipset?
