I've been saving up for a bit. This will be the first TV I will have ever owned (I'm 22).

Any tips ?

Uh. Define best. You can get a mediocre sized(32"-34") tube based HDTV for that, or you can get a medium sized(48"-55") RPTV for it. What sort of size/features do you want? How much space do you have to work with? Will it be mainly for movies, games, standard content? Do you want HDTV?

get a widescreen (16:9) HDTV.
for that price, you can get either a 32-36" direct view CRT set or a 40-50" CRT rear projection TV. Direct view CRt has better picture quality if you don't mind smaller screen size and the heavy weight.

I don't need a Huge TV. 30-36" or so should be enough.

I will use it for movies, games, and some cable television.

HDTV would be nice... but can you get a good one for under $1000?

1) I wouldn't buy a Sony Product
2) I would never spend 4 digits on a 34" TV

Take a look at the new Toshiba 30HF84 (replaces the popular HF83 model). You should be able to get it for less than $900. 2 component inputs, 1 HDMI input, widescreen 30". Very nice HD-ready TV. I'm looking at getting the bigger 34" version (34HF84) once I can find it locally for a good price.

do you want 16:9 or 4:3? Basically do you watch more dvds/game/hdtv? Or regular tv? That will be a deciding factor.

Meh. IMHO I think it's a waste of $$$ dumping $900 on a 30" TV. I'd just assume get a nice Samsung or Toshiba flatscreen 27" for less than 1/3 of the money. On a 30" TV HD and component imputs are nothing more than a novelty to me. You can argue that picture quality is better, which it will be, but you are still stuck spending a boat load of money for not a lot of product.

It's like ordering fillet-o-beef vs. ribeye. I can get a 20oz ribey for $18, or an 8oz fillet for $20.

I always choose ribeye. :)

Are you one of those "as long as your car gets you from point A to B, no need for any luxury" guys as well?

Wouldn't say that. I looked at Audi A4's but instead choose a Passat because it was a good $5,000 cheaper, had considerably more room in all respects, and better insurance rates but still used the same platform and exact same engine..

To me, "best" is a combination of multiple things. In the case of this post, "best" in regards to a TV is a combination of picture quality and screen size. I think HD content on a small screen, and in todays age 30"-34" IS a small screen, is a utter waste of money. You pay far too much of a premium to get it. I'd much rather go the RPTV route and a much larger screen for the same price.

It would depend on your viewing distance, signal (cable/satellite, willing to pay for hdtv, etc?). Watch lots of DVDs? Console games?
Sony does have a 32 or 34" hdtv which I have seen personally in someone's home and it looked great imo. Watched a dvd on it even.

OK, here is the deal.

Amazon has the Toshiba 30HF84 that I recommended yesterday for just $716.99 with Free Shipping.

That is an amazing price - it is a brand new model that sells for $900 most places.

I just posted a deal for it on GottaDeal if you want more info.
