What is the best time to end an ebay auction?

Although my grammar probably isn't perfect, I think I have a legitimate question :p. I'm wondering, since a lot of people around here seem to be eBay veterans, what is an optimal time to end an auction? I'm sure there would probably be more people on (generally speaking) at one time or another, what are your experiences in this? Just thought it would be nice to find out :)

Thanks!:D

I don't know for sure, but I've thought about this too. Maybe Sunday-Thursday @8pm? THat way, you get the people just off work before they go to bed, including the people who party on weekends. That's the way I figure it anyways.

I know for sure. 6:30 pacific time is the busiest time. The busiest day is Sunday, also at 6:30.

(This is from a router graph for one of eBay's image servers...)

eBay can rot in hell for not making bids placed in the last few minutes of an auction extend the length of the auction (like uBid). ROT IN HELL.

he's right you know...

Nash's game theory dictates that the best time to cheat other's is right before the ends... if they extended it like uBid then people like me wouldn't win so many items at low prices :D

Thus making one of the truly attractive points of online auctions (the chance for a low price) almost totally negated. I personally hate uBids system, even after I've bought a laptop and headphones from them.

I agree with this, the feeling of getting a *deal* is gone with ubid's option, although it is probably better for the seller.

Now that we have determined the best time to end an eBay auction, when is the best time to begin an auction? What's better - 3 day, 5 day, or 7 day?

I would say that the ideal time would be 7:30PM CST weekdays or during the afternoon on weekends.

Well, 7 would probably net the most views of course, but I'm not sure if that actually pays off; good question.

Depends on the item. Rare stuff like antiques I tend to let it go for longer as people might not be looking for it everyday and you want to be able to see it for the longest time. More mundane items like cd burners usually only get bids in the last few hours anyways so I don't think it matters as much.

Sunday 6PM PST (9PM EST) works best for me

I receive the most bids if my auction ends at that time.
West coast and east coast bidders are at home, finished with dinner, watching TV and surfing the net.
Few people are asleep during these times ensuring maximum exposure.

the time of day to end your item depends on the type of item. more adult things like furniture, tools, carparts etc. are better around noon, when the majority of buyers are on their lunch break. for things like video games & collectibles, a couple hours after school breaks out is good. for things like blankets, womens things, early evening is good.

i agree with kami33, that antiques and rares should be listed longer than common things.

remagavon is right with the fact that extending the bidding time after a bid kills the whole idea of trying to find a deal. also too many businesses are coming to ebay and setting up shop. they usually put ridiculously high reserves or opening bids on items, that are inflating the whole market. couple years back, it was the norm to find brand new $50 games on ebay for like $35. now, half the sellers online are businesses, & that same $50 game closes for $48.

sunday evening, 6:00 PST. Have sold many big ticket items ($2,500+) and get much more for them on sundays.

There's a book that did a study on this and found auctions ending Sunday evening had better results than any other time/date combo. I would consider both PST and EST so that you have the entire nation to work with instead of having it end 11pm PST.
