..For a super socket 7? Eventually want to put a new one in this old rig, so any input on this matter is welcome.

thanks

See if you can find a K6-III. I had one that did 500MHz and at the time it was great. I moved from that chip to an Athlon 500 and then the K6-III seemed like junk. :p

Heh, yes, junk it is :)- I have a k6-ll 533 and it is pretty bad, but better than nothing. When my wife and I get jobs (we just moved) I will eventually build a better rig. I am guessing the best thing is a k6-lll 500 of some sort? can one still purchase these things?

It's the same thing.

A K6 of some sort running 400 or moremhz will run win2k well, and winxp passably.

It will not play games in any meaningful way, obviously, and is vastly inferior to an equivalent P2/3 or athlon, but it will get the job done for a very basic office/internet machine.

However, there were a LOT of socket 7 motherboards; maybe more than for socket-A, so you have to find out what fsb and multipliers your board supports before you go hunting for a cpu.

ACtually k6-3s have on-chip 2nd level cache- I think 256 kb. I have a k6-2 and it does not have any 2nd level cahce, along with all k6-2s
