what is the best software to watch DVDs in?

I'm a noob when it comes to watching DVDs on the PC so I have a few questions:

How do I get the best image quality with the system I have (my CPU is a 2500k)? What's the difference between a software player/codec/whatever and my GTX660 Ti?

What's the best software player?

What are the sacrifices to be made for the best IQ?

Do any of the movie studios sell their movies as digital downloads?

I use MPC-HC with the cyberlink powerdvd codec for DXVA decoding of MPEG-2 (DVD) video. You can get the cyberlink codecs from the shark 007 codec pack. I think that the LAV filters (which I use for every other video format) also support DXVA decoding of MPEG-2 now. With DXVA decoding you also get advanced deinterlacing, which is important as many DVDs are still interlaced.

Many people like to use MadVR with MPC-HC for upscaling DVD video. Your GPU should be ideal for it.

MPC-HC, MadVR, and the LAV filters all have their official support threads at Doom9's forum.

The AVS-Forum has lots of info too:
