I am trying to find a good bottle of scotch. I'm going to buy one as a gift, and one for my personal bar. I've only had scotch on occasions and don't really know of many brands besides Glenlivet and Johnny Walker.

What are your favorites kinds/brands of scotch to drink?
Do you prefer the single malts or the blended scotches?

Any insight/opinions are helpful...

Edit: Clarified thread topic.

in the "special treats" line

It seems McCallan and Laphraig are pretty popular choices... maybe I'll give those a shot.

You can't go wrong with either of those.

One of my favs is Tomatin. It's a 12yr single-malt that goes for about $20/750mL. A very oaken taste without that medicinal overtaste that plagues most cheap scotches.
