There is no "best", and no one can really answer that particular question for another user. Much of it is personal preference, or need by particular end-users (example: the digital design/art crowd might opt for the highest resolution available). Would suggest you find the resolution at which you work most comfortable in a desktop/application environment. Higher resolution displays have their benefits, of course - but only if the user is comfortable operating at the high of a pixel count.
Viewing the various types of displays available at a local retailer might prove a useful experience. A majority of the displays will be of the XGA/WXGA variety, but you should be able to find a handful at the higher resolutions.
