Search the Off Topic forum for ReplayTV, TIVO, PVR or DVR this has been discussion several times before.

If you have DirecTV satellite service I would get the DirecTivo.

If you can find a hacked ReplayTV on eBay, I would buy that.

If you have to buy new I'd check out TIVO at Best Buy, sometimes they have "open box" units for $199 which are new still have fully mfg warranty but may be missing the manual.

It also depends on your budget.

yes... but for a tivo with lifetime service it's $400 + $250, so price isn't really all that different.
tivo vs replay is basically mac vs pc. their features are comprable (except that replay has automatic commercial skip, show sharing over the internet, 480 progressive vga out, etc.) my advice to you would be to try both and see which one you like best, either one is better than nothing. (but the replay is better :D)

<---- proud owner of two replays, currently the replaytv 4040

no, there is currently a $249 activation fee for replays (old ones are still fee-free), but from now on it's required (to help stores lower their costs)
