best popup blocker: a browser other than IE. All the good ones let you disable popup ads without breaking good popup windows.

Try Mozilla or Opera.


best ad blocker: your hosts file. I think winxp has it in /windows/system32/drivers/etc/. Just make all the ad server names to it, pointing to 127.0.0.1 or something. Note that if you don't have a web server of some sort running, this might slow things down or cause an influx of error boxes when browsing.
