I apologize in advance if this is a repost of a discussed topic.

So what are your opinions on pick up trucks? Personally looking at all the trucks out there I have a deep love for the Ford F-350 Superduty diesel. But I also find the new Toyota Tundra 381 hp beast sexy and their diesel concept shown at the Detroit auto show looks promising.

I also have a few questions regarding fuel consumption of a truck like the Ford F-350 Superduty diesel. On the website it says vehicals of that weight are exempt from EPA testing.

Another question I have is the pricing of the Ford cars. Being domestic they sure cost a hella of a lot, even more then Toyota trucks, anyone know the reason as to why?

I would like to hear vouchers for Dodge/Chevy/GMC trucks too if possible, the Ram looks pretty cool but it just doesnt grab my fancy the same way an F-350 does.

Also if I had the money my dream truck would be a harley davidson edition F-350 and with it I would drive from here all the way to chile and back having a trip of a lifetime!

Good luck with that.

Dodge Cummins.

Don't bother with the Hemi. On Dodgetruckworld.com people with Hemis don't understand why the Cummins owners mock them until they drive one. More torque+3 or more times the MPG when towing=win!

the chevy trucks are like the luxury car of the truck market. they ride smoother, get good milage and have good towing. they are well built and drive very good. they get beat in one cat or another by others but noone has an overall package like the chevy or gmc. toyota comes the closest.

Why does an F-350 cost more than a Toyota?

Well a Diesel engine is roughly double the cost of an equivalenr gas engine, Diesels last about 3x longerthan a gas engine.

Also, what is the rated towing ability of a Toyota compared to a F350. I believe the Toyota competes in the half-ton truck class of the F150 and not in the 3/4 or 1-ton class of the F250 & F350.

Expect an $8K discount on a loaded F350 Diesel.

Are you buying new or used? If new, the F-350 has the new 6.4 liter diesel, and it's in its first year. Might want to wait a year or so to let it get the bugs worked out. The 6 liter Powerstroke in previous years was a problem for Ford (2003-2007). Not a lot of happy campers with that diesel. Read here: Ford diesel forums. 2003 and older had the 7.3 liter Powerstroke which could be said is one of the best lighter-duty diesel engines ever built. The chassis and bodies of the F-350 are rock-solid.

The GM's had trouble with the Duramax in 2001-2003 with some of them overheating for some reason or another. Read about that here: GM's diesel forums. However, the Duramax is mated with the best transmission ever built: the Allison. Like mentioned above, they have a nice fit and finish. A little more refined than the other two....

Dodge also had it's problems with fuel pumps and transmissions in the earlier diesel trucks. The 2003-2004 had a problem with the fuel lift pump. Read here: Dodge diesel forums.. The new 6.7 liter Cummins mated with the 6-speed Aisin transmission is a killer combo. Some will argue that the Aisin trans is better built than the Allison... We use Allison trnasmissions in all of our firetrucks at work and NEVER had a trans failure....

In a one-ton truck, you will average 17-20 MPG if driven reasonably on the highway and 15 around town. Some earlier (2002, 03, 04) diesels (All 3 makes) could get upwards of 21 or so on the highway.

BTW, one of the ER docs I know has an '08 Tundra and is happy when he gets 13 MPG average.....

Hope this helps,

Bob

The best truck is the one I build to suit me. there isn't a single new truck I would want.

the new gm trucks also have the fuel management system. it cuts out cylinders to save gas when you dont need them. this system is susposed to help gas milage a lot. that said, even my fathers yukon xl gets 16 to 17 in 50/50 driving. the new 5.3l gas engine should get close to 20.

Just like they had problems with the original Cummins when it came out, and TONS of problems with both versions of the Powerstroke when they were introduced.

Never buy anything when it is first released.

This is pretty much the truth, and always has been.

Ford and Dodge have never, ever had as good a ride as Chevy/GMC trucks.

All 3 have taken turns with payload claims, and who could carry the most at any particular point in time.

GM trucks have always, without exception, been more reliable than Fords and especially Dodges.
That's why there are more GM trucks still on the road today.

I remember the old, crappy Ford Twin I-Beam suspension.....load one down and the front would sway back and forth like crazy. But you could load a Chevy until the bumper about dragged the ground and still drive it with one hand.

I've had both brands, and even enjoyed my Fords, but even then I recognized the GM's were better.

Why it can't be done? My friends dad drove his pontiac in the 70's from Ecuador to Toronto and back. And a few years back some of my parents friends drove an old ass VW diesel golf all the way to belize and back.

It's that dangerous? Are you just saying that because you heard it's dangerous or have personal experience?

From what I have read (And 2 friends that have the 6.7 liter Cummins), most of the problems are solved with a ECM reprogram.... I am sure there are other things too...

But even though I have to admit, as I am not a huge Ford fan, the 7.3 Powerstroke after about 1995 was one of the best diesels ever produced. ALL of our ambulances from 1994 to 2003 had the 7.3 PS and we NEVER had an engine failure. That is pretty severe duty, too.

But I agree that the first year (Maybe even second year) production of a new design is one to stay away from. The 6.0 liter Powerstroke is a case in point.

Powerstroke was introduced mid-year 1994. 1995 was the first year they were the only diesel option available.
Until about 1997, they had TONS of problems with them....not necessarily internal engine problems, but lot of problems with the fuel system.
Here in Raleigh, NC....Wake County EMS had these abominations, and at all times we had several Wake EMS vehicles in our shop. They had problem after problem....outlying counties had their EMS vehicles towed in on a regular basis, too.
Wreckers, construction trucks, you name it.....they all had huge problems with the original Powerstroke.
Then, when they had the 7.3 problems pretty much ironed out, they replaced it with the 6.0's....which have been worse than the 7.3's were when they went with the Direct Injection (which is what Powerstroke is).

I'm glad your personal experience was okay, but I ran our truck shop back in the mid-90's, so I know first-hand the problems of that particular era. Injectors, injector O-rings, lift pumps, turbos, gas pedals (had the sensor built-in), you name it. We saw plenty of internal problems, too, but the bad stuff was mostly DI-related.

the 7.3 is an international engine, not a ford. but it was a great motor, we had about 450,000 on a non-turbo 7.3 in a 24500 gvw box truck, what did it in is the oil pressure sending unit on the back of the block, the brass tube broke and it pumped itself dry.

Driving a Harley Davidson edition pickup makes you look like a douchebag in the third world AND in the USA. The difference is that while people here will laugh at your mid life crisis behind your back, in S. America you'll get kidnapped, robbed, killed, or all of the above.
